The laptop AC adapter is also called the power supply or the power brick.  It is not the battery, as that is the separate part that is actually integrated into the body of the notebook computer.  The AC adapter generally has a power cord that runs from the wall to the adapter, and then the adapter body with a built in cord that leads to the plug that inserts into the body of the notebook computer.  The most common failing point is the cord just as it enters the computer plug.  This section receives quite a bit of abuse as it is pulled from side to side and possibly stretched when the plug is detached from the computer.

AC adapters are typically designed for international inputs ranging from 100VAC to 240VAC, and can either run on 60hZ or 50hZ.  Various plug adapters are available to adapter the standard US power cord to fit into international power sockets.
